New school council bylaws

Blake’s bylaw committee has been working over the last few months to draft some basic bylaws for our school council.

Under Ontario’s Education Act, all parent councils are required to have bylaws that define its membership and how council functions and make decisions.

That means there will be changes to how our school council operates next year, but we believe these bylaws will help us maintain strong parent/community engagement and a focus on equity.

Some highlights:

  • Blake is required to designate voting members. We propose a council of up to 30 members, 10 of whom must be present at council meetings to establish quorum;
  • Parents/caregivers can sign up to be members at the first council meeting of the year in September, or later in the year if vacancies remain;
  • Blake’s school council will elect at least three executive officers to run for one-year terms (chair or co-chairs; a treasurer and a secretary.)

You can read the full draft bylaws here.

We’ll be discussing and then voting on these draft bylaws at this week’s council meeting on Wednesday, April 11 at 6:00 p.m. We invite you to attend or send any feedback to blakeschoolcouncil.tdsb@gmail.com.

Creating school communities of well being: a workshop

Parents, teachers and community members are invited to attend an upcoming workshop called Creating School Communities of Well Being, to be held at Blake school on Thursday, April 26 from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The workshop is put on by the Adoption Council of Ontario and focuses on helping children deal with the impact of trauma and loss.

Volunteers Needed

Have a special skill and some free time?

The track and field coaching team is looking for interested parent coaches. If this is something that interests you, please email Mme Dorcin at Christine.dorcin@tdsb.on.ca.

If you’re interested in coaching other athletics at Blake, this is the time to begin that process, starting by picking up an application form from the main office. You’ll also need to have a police reference check done through your nearest Toronto Police Service station.

The next mandatory Community Coaches meeting is April 17 at Cosburn Middle School from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. For more information, please contact Ms. Kiil or Ms. Foussias.

Mme Dorcin is also looking for volunteers with a sewing background to make vests for the dance troupe. Please email her directly if this is something you can help with.

In mid to late April, Blake will be starting the first of many large scale art projects. This year’s project will consist of having each child from kindergarten to grade 6 paint themselves on a fence post, which will then be added to the exterior fence surrounding the school’s front garden.

This project is designed to brighten the school’s entry, and add vibrant student voice to our garden area. Blake will need a number of volunteers to support prep work, and help younger students as they move through the artistic process. If interested, please contact principal Jennifer Zurba at jennifer.zurba@tdsb.on.ca.

The dates of the project run from April 24 to May 14 so there is lots of availability an many volunteers needed.
